Gaming table
I have done some measuring and I can just about fit a 4' x 5' (1220x1525mm) table in my study and get round three sides of it. I would not want it there all the time, so I have built a demountable table that sits on fold up builders trestles when I need to take it somewhere or on shelving in my workshop storage area.
48" is a little too far to comfortably reach over so I now understand why Warhammer 40k is usually played on a 44" rather than a 48" deep table. I have therefore made my table 44"x60" (1120x1525mm) which works for most tabletop games, including the one I am most likely to play, which is One Page Rules.
We will also use the table for cakes and teas when we open our garden to raise money for the NGS charity. We've already bought a tablecloth for the purpose.
The first time I attempted to lift the tabletop, I decided that it needed handles. I've added some simple webbing handles that make it much easier to carry on my own.
The emulsion is fairly robust, but does mark. So before it starts to look tatty, I've added a couple of layers of clear coat. I'm always nervous of clear varnish or lacquers as they all have a risk of going white if the temperature is too cold. As it's winter, I made sure I warmed up the workshop well in advance before I started this job.
The picture does not do it justice. With the clear coat applied and dried, there is no noticeable change in colour and it's more difficult to mark the surface.

Xbox custom skin
Microsoft now sell controllers in different colours and there are some examples of other unique paint jobs and mods for controllers that can easily be found by a quick search. Some of my favourites are from End of Line designs.
My design deliberately does not impede the function of any of the buttons.
The controller comes apart fairly easily with a bit of fiddling to unclip the two side grips. They hide some of the screws. It needs a T8 security screwdriver for the torx head screws. One screw is hidden under the label in the battery tray.
It's made from plastic sheet and car filler then spray painted to look, hopefully, like old cast steel.

Elite Dangerous - things I needed to know
The trouble is that this type of space game appeals to me, so eventually, when the price was reduced due to a special offer, I bought it.
Now this is when it got complicated. It is a very difficult game to learn and, in my opinion, the built-in tutorials are inadequate. It's one of those games where you need the Internet at hand beside you to learn even some of the basics!
The training missions only barely gave me enough confidence to start playing but I am glad I did.
There are plenty of guides and tutorials available on the internet, I'm not trying to repeat those. I have the Horizons add-on, the Commander edition and play on the Xbox One. Some of these comments may be specific to any or all of those.
This is a list of the things that I found confusing when starting out. I'll update this as things happen to me:
Lock on to a base before docking - the tutorial says, "get the speed and distance indicators in to the blue to approach a station." I could not see any blue for those on my HUD.
The training mission had neglected to highlight that you need to lock on to the space station using your target panel before the approach details will display at the bottom left of your main HUD.
Docking - Everyone needs to request docking. You can only do this when you get to less than 7.5km from the base or station.
Use the target panel, in the contacts tab, select the station name and select the request docking option.
I find manual docking tedious. The Auto-dock can do it much more accurately and a lot faster than I can.
Scanners need to be setup like weapons - you need to assign them to a weapons group. Target an object and hold down whatever fire button you assigned.
Discovery scanner - all ships start equipped with the basic one of those. Takes a while to charge while you hold down the trigger. Information about new planets etc. can be sold when you get over 20LY's away.
Planetary scanner - get close to a planet in super-cruise and you can scan the planet which is worth credits. [TBC: is the scan automatic?]
Scan a Nav Beacon - don't ignore them, they provide useful information about the system, specifically where the bases are. I spent ages trying to find bases to drop deliveries off at before I read about Nav Beacons.
Drop out of super-cruise close to the Nav Beacon. The actual beacon will be near to where you originally targeted but for some reason not the actual position the target lock claims. Look on your scanner for a blue square. Aim your ship towards that and when in sight target it (press the 'A' key.) If it is the Nav Beacon your HUD should put pale blue chevrons either side. Get close, I'm not sure how close but I know it works at 50m. I keep bumping in to them I get so close! A message will display to let you know it is reading the data. It does not take long and the message will change when it is complete.
I have not confirmed but apparently an Advanced Discovery Scanner will do this at a longer distance.
Nav Beacons are a magnet for the unscrupulous so I tend to only use them when I don't already have enough information about a system.
Drop cargo - when a pirate asks for money you need to drop cargo to that value. There is no way to hand over cash, as far as I know. When you only get 10 seconds to do this, learning what and how is not an option!
Planetary flight - I found this very confusing to start with. I had assumed that super-cruise did not work for planetary flight. I was wrong.
As you approach a planet and pass under the blue line you enter orbital cruise automatically. This is super-cruise but with a different name!
If you deviate from about -5 to +60 degrees from the horizontal, for too long, you will drop out of orbital cruise and go slower.
If you stay within the light blue -5 to +5 scale you will orbit the planet very quickly. The closer to 0 degrees you can keep your flight the faster you go. Very easy to overshoot the target.
I found I had to keep dipping the nose down to see the target base. If there is a way to see it in the scanner I have not worked that out yet. When the angle to the base is greater than 45 degrees I tend to head down.
After a while, if you keep the correct angle, you will enter glide. This is also a fast means of travel. If you deviate too much you will drop out of glide and slow down considerably.
If you drop out too soon you need to decide if you want to escape orbit and try again or just keep going for the painfully slow approach in normal flight!
When approaching the planet surface you may need to brake rather than accelerate.
Mass Locked - This is the indicator under the fuel gauge and is on when near stations. It stops you charging your Frame Shift Drive (FSD) while it is lit. Once it goes out you can enter super-cruise or hyperdrive to jump out of the system.

Combat - I've played the game for many, many hours and I've bought and equipped my third ship yet I have only been in three combat situations. The first, I was helped by a system defence vessel, which did all the hard work. The second I got destroyed before I even managed to enable my weapons but by the third I had equipped a fast ship that allowed me to run away when things got out of hand.

Xbox One Day Two
When it arrived the first thing I had to do after plugging it in was to wait for the obligatory day one update. My internet connection is not very fast because of where I live so I had planned to let that run while I was having dinner. It took a bit longer than that but before I went to bed I purchased my first game and started it downloading.
As I wanted the Xbox One in the living room I opted for a game I knew my wife would like. Need for Speed, Rivals. By morning it had installed.
Despite my poor Internet speed I do not want to have to play with the disk in the drive. Therefore it is necessary to purchase all my games as download. I am happy with this but I will have to be patient when a game comes out to wait for it to finish downloading.
Back to my first impressions.
The Good
Most important to me is that it has a good controller and it does. Fits my hand well and every action is very positive. If I had to criticise then I'd say the battery cover is a bit thin!
I like the design of the main box. It sits discretely in the living room without standing out. I disliked the 360 design because it was just too deliberately shaped and odd. The advantage of the slightly larger box of the Xbox One is that they have kept the noise down. It is quiet which is important to me because my plan was to have it in the living room as a media centre. Sadly that point appears in my Bad section, so read on.
The setup is also very easy. Hardly any, just the Kinect really. The Kinect just has a couple of next, next, next, screens and job is done. I found it very clever how the Kinect knows where I am based on the controller I am holding. My living room is too small to play many connect games. I have so little floor area that it detected my sofa as the floor! That had a very easy adjustment.
I only have the one full game and the free downloads. The graphics are a small step up and they run smoothly but on what I have seen so far the extra power of the new box has not been pushed very hard.
Now for...
The Bad
All the advertising indicated that the Xbox One could be the centre of my living room. Recent news articles were very pleased to announce that the Xbox One would be DLNA compliant and that the PS4 was not. There's Netflix, Love film, Sky and a few others I had never heard of BUT it won't play videos from my NAS box!
It is useless to me in the living room because IT WILL NOT PLAY MY EXISTING VIDEOS!
For me that is a big oversight. I will now move the box to my study to just play games on and carry on using my Xbox 360 as my media centre in the living room.
I hope Microsoft will add the feature in the future but for the time being it is only any good for playing games.
Having said that, at the moment that is the only really bad point I have found. If that is not important to you then you should be very excited.
The Ugly
This is the disappointing stuff or where it does not work so well.
Being able to swap back to the main menu without leaving the game is a good feature BUT they forgot to make sure the game writers took it in to account. Need for Speed Rivals gets confused if you swap players mid game.
When you return to need for speed from the other player, it says it is restarting BUT it restarts as the first player again and takes you back to the very beginning tutorials! Not permanent, just restart the Xbox One and continue from where you previously were. On that point not having an exit from a game is not ideal. The Xbox One needs an exit otherwise the game carries on running until you start something else.
The lack of useful media centre features that I want mean I have no use for split screen. It appears to work but I have no reason to try it out.
Another minor point against using the Xbox One in the living room is that the Kinect cable is not long enough. Don't get me wrong, it is a long cable but still not long enough for my small living room. At the moment it is too soon to be able to buy an extension lead.
It did make me laugh that the box I used to perch the Kinect on to position it was the box from my Ouya console!
The tiled interface is not bad but it is confusing as the tiles move about a bit. I'll get used to it. There are some bits missing. There is no way I can find to tell how much battery life is left in the controllers and no way to see how much disk space has been used.
I would have liked to use a keyboard for entering text, like I do on the Xbox 360, but this is not supported at the moment:

The reply in that forum suggests using SmartGlass to get a more convenient keyboard.
For A Few Dollars More
Having said the above it is to be expected for a day one purchase. It will take time and I need to buy a few more games when the games designed to take account of more of the features of the Xbox One start coming out.
The main thing for a game console is was it fun to play. I spent all of yesterday afternoon crashing police cars in to racers in Need for Speed, Rivals and enjoyed every minute. So, yes, it is good.
No point in rushing to buy one yet but when a few more good games come out I think you are going to want one.

Ouya Early Crop
Here are my initial opinions of what I have tried. I should point out I have a very low tolerance for rubbish quality, poor interface design and inadequate tutorials or in game guidance about what to do. I have a life, I am not a teenager with endless hours to try things out, I have to be able to pick up a game, play it immediately and then go and do something else.
Flashout 3D
This was pretty much a launch game and has been shown off in several places. It suffers from overscan problems on my screen, meaning some of the menus and instructions appear off of the screen. This makes playing and setting it up difficult so I have not given this a fair chance yet. I played through a couple of races and it looked OK but it's not fun having to struggle with the menus!
First impressions last. I may or may not go back to this if they fix the menus!
Bards Tail
I was expecting more from this. Sadly the port was disappointing. The graphics appear in a window in the middle of the screen and are a bit too low resolution. That said, I can see the menus so I played on. Trouble is I got to a point where I could not find any way other than to die by being burnt to death by a big rat. There were no in game tutorials to help me past this point so I just stopped playing.
Final Fantasy III
I had high hopes for this being a well known series. The good news, everything worked and fitted the screen. Nice lead in to get you going. Trouble is, I am not a 6 year old any more so the style and game play was not to my taste!
For those that like that sort of game, you probably already know what to expect and will find it fun.
ShadowGun
I had been waiting for this having seen the trailers and was excited to give it a go. The good news is they have done a good job of the interface to fit the screen and to work with the controllers. The tutorial section at the start is just right. It was clear what to do and the path through the game was evident.
So far so good. The graphics look good as well. Not next gen AAA but plenty good enough for this genre. Think original half life but with improved textures. During the tutorial level I did struggle with the sensitivity of the controls. Before going in to the main level I tinkered with the sensitivity, which is the only adjustment. I got it a fraction better but it felt throughout the game that I was not fully in control.
It's a duck behind cover and shoot type game, but I found that on the easy setting I could often walk up to the normal enemies and just shoot at point blank range. The turrets required hiding and a nice touch is that some of the cover can be destroyed so you have to be careful where you hide.
Now for the problems. I found that aiming was difficult because the controller would often overshoot the target by a long way. Initially I thought it might be me but after some testing could show clearly that I could let go of the controls and they just ran on. In the worst cases the game got out of sync with my controls. I would press the controller to rotate then move forwards and nothing would happen then the character would spin and move while I was not touching the controls!
With patience I put up with these glitches which could last for a minute at times. I was still able to complete the entire free level but I found myself compensating for the lag. Pulling the trigger early or deliberately aiming off to hit a target a moment latter. That is not how I like to play a modern shooter!
For me this is still the most impressive game so far I've tried and I hope the controller problems can be sorted.
Muffin Knight
I saw this advertised as coming to the Ouya. I had no idea what it was about but looked like a polished game so worth a try.
This is another one where the interface has been correctly adjusted for the Ouya. Well done. There is a silly story to explain why you are a knight collecting muffins. Each level drops muffins and various creatures to avoid or shoot.
Initially OK but once it got more active I found the lag from the controls and the overrun while moving too frustrating. The good news is that you restart very quickly after you die.
Again, this is one for the youngsters and not my cup of tea.
That's it for games. The only other thing I have installed is the XBMC media player.
XBMC
This has to be side loaded and there are plenty of tutorials to tell you how to do that. Apart from the Ouya web browser not having any indication of the state of your download it was fairly easy to get up and running.
XBMC is a very polished App. It puts the rest of the Ouya to shame. It even includes overscan compensation so you can adjust the usable area to fit your screen.
I found it confusing to find the right network protocol to work with my network storage but that was partly because you need to attach the storage and then on a completely different screen connect to a folder and add it to your catalogue. I didn't bother to read any instructions and still managed to get it to work. I could have saved myself some time by reading up on what I should have been doing.
The good news, it works, I could play my videos and after the last Ouya update it stopped crashing when I tried to fast forward! XBMC works reliably. The only oddity is that despite its console background the controls only work with the D-Pad. I find the thumbstick much nicer to use but that does not work in XBMC at the moment.
It's not all good news though. The video quality is not as good as the other media player I use, which is my Xbox 360. That was disappointing. It also had some jitter during playback. If I had nothing to compare it with the video would have been fine but as I have a better player I am unlikely to use the Ouya for video at the moment. My belief is that this is because this version of XBMC does not use any hardware acceleration.
An Ouya specific version is being worked on and I have high hopes for that.
Summary
All in all, so far I have been disappointed with what I have tried but I can clearly see there is potential. I just need to be patient.
Ouya The Early Days
To cut a long story short, so far the Ouya has been disappointing. It shows promise but in my opinion has been released a little bit before it is ready.
My view so far:
Overscan
The biggest issue for me is the overscan problem. This is where some of the screen is clipped by the edges of the screen. Every screen is different and some screens will not have any overscan. For anyone working in TV or developing games for any other console, this is a well known issue. The solution used by both TV and games console manufacturers is to have a margin round the outer edge of the screen by 10% of the pixels. Nothing important is ever displayed in that 10% and all text is kept within the central 80% of the screen.
Other games consoles, probably all except the Ouya, have restrictions enforced against the developers of games. If anything important is in that outer margin the game can not be distributed. The developers soon fix that problem. Ouya advertise how open they are and because of that I think, they have "shot themselves in the foot." Leaving it up to the developer to make decisions that spoil the games for some people!
The standard XBMC media player which works on the Ouya allows you to set the visible limits of the screen and keeps all text within that. This works great. Sadly the vast majority of the initial crop of games on the Ouya have come from mobile phones and tablets which rarely if ever suffer overscan problems. The developers porting the apps are either ignorant of the problem or could not be bothered to fix it before releasing on the Ouya!
This has left a lot of disappointed Ouya owners that cannot find games that they can play. Their frustration is taken out on the Ouya support forums!
Controller Lag
This is one of those tricky areas. I cannot prove if the lag comes from the hardware or the games themselves however it is very frustrating.
All I can say is that in any of the fast action games I have played so far this becomes an issue. I have seen run on, where the character or object in a game keeps moving after I let go of the controller. I have seen continuous rotation, so the character spins when I am doing nothing and the worst is that I see the game play my key presses several seconds behind when I have pressed the keys.
Again, I hope this is one that developers, as they get more familiar with the Ouya, will be able to overcome.
A couple of other point while on controls. The touch pad is too vague and too fast to be of any use. I understand why it is there but it is nearly useless. So far the only manufacturing problem I have is that one key, left bumper, gets stuck on the controller housing. I may have to get a knife out to trim back some plastic!
Ouya User Interface
This is the last problem for now. Back to my previous point. It's just not finished. The front screen and the first level of sub menus are nice and clean and it is easy to find what you want. The Discover section initially had its foibles but Ouya improved those last week.
The problems are in the Advance menu where you get to what is clearly a completely unmodified mobile phone implementation of the interface. Now with the overscan I have it means that many of the essential options, like deleting files, are inaccessible! There are probably other options I can't use but I don't know what they are because they are off my screen!
This is one that clearly Ouya need to fix.
The Good News
I thought I should end on some positive points.

- Looks Good
- Easy to setup (just plug in the HDMI and power, job done)
- Upgrades are quick and painless
- Controller feels nice in my hand
- I particularly like the weight and where the batteries are housed
- Controller has the right number of buttons in the right places (for my liking)
- Wireless controllers connect easily to the Ouya
- Low cost
- Developers can self publish games (Indie games)
- Every game has a free demo (that is such a good idea)
I look forward to some better games coming out and for the fixable issues to be resolved.
