I usually use a grey car primer for the miniatures that I paint. Sometimes I prefer a different colour as the base.
I used to use Vallejo airbrush primer, but this is very time consuming.
I've started a trial to see which rattle can primers work well as a base for acrylic paints. I've selected a few from Amazon. The Hycote grey is the best value, followed closely by the Motip black. The Army Painter black is more than twice as expensive. The Citadel Chaos black costs so much more that I have not bought any to try.
So far I've established the following;
Vallejo airbrush primer
- Adhesion: Good on plastic but not metal.
- Application: Time consuming but a smooth result.
Hycote grey primer
- Adhesion: Good on plastic and metal.
- Application: Quick, fairly runny with a smooth result.
Motip black primer
- Adhesion: Good on plastic and metal.
- Application: Quick, slightly thick but a good result.
Army Painter black
- Not yet used.
Citadel Chaos black primer
- More expensive than the others.
As I try them more, I'll update this page with my conclusions.
